I have been in the business since 1975 and with 3Macs, since 1993. I joined MacDougall because it is an independent and focused firm. At 3Macs, we do only one thing: advise private clients. The firm does not underwrite securities nor does it trade for its own account thus eliminating conflicts of interest. I like that. I also like to use our client service department for tax preparation, estate settlement and financial planning. Our Head Office is in Montreal and this makes it easier for me to solve client problems promptly.
Looking at the industry today, most large brokerage firms tend to push their clients into their company or company sponsored mutual funds. Their brokers have become asset gatherers and the focus is on getting bigger instead of providing top service. At MacDougall, each account is managed separately and tailored to the needs of the client, not the firm. You talk to me, the manager of your account and we work together to select the right securities.
I would say that my style is conservative. I select good dependable companies that can grow and protect my client’s assets against inflation. In taxable accounts I try to minimize taxes when possible. Trying to make money fast implies taking more risk. I tend to prefer a high probability of a good return to a lower probability of a higher return.
