The Firm
Affectionately known as 3 Macs, the firm provides financial and investment management services with a focus on families. In fact, as a firm we have always strived to be a family. Our 160 years of history was recently published in a book titled “Staying Connected”, co-authored by the late James Ferrabee and Michael Harrison. Our legacy of financial service to families lives on.
The Portfolio Manager
Bart has been with the firm since November 1959, and after 44 years as a director and 13 years as Chairman, he recently retired from the board to devote his time to managing the investments of his long standing clients and attracting new ones.
The Mission
Our firm’s portfolio management is tailored to the objectives and risk profile of each client/family, but our fundamental philosophy is preservation of capital and growth of income. This implies a degree of focus on equity investments, but not to the exclusion of bonds and cash when circumstances require it. We also assist with other financial services such as life insurance, estate and tax planning, settlement of estates, and filing of tax returns. We utilize external expertise as necessary.
The Relationship
The key to our successful business is in the relationship we have with our clients. Relationships are built over time and we expect that a mutual trust develops. Regular communication reinforces this trust, and ensures that changing circumstances and expectations are not overlooked.
Succession
After more than 50 years with the firm, Bart is mindful that succession is an increasingly important consideration. To that end, he is in the process of developing a team by sharing many of his clients with other, younger, Investment Advisors. He currently shares accounts with Tim McNicholas, David MacDougall, Derek Rennie, Diane Stoneman, and Jennifer Peters, all qualified portfolio managers. As important, or more important, is his assistant Linda Miniota, who serves his clients with extra-ordinary dexterity.
Community Interests
Since 1993, Bart has been active with Outward Bound. He was Chairman of Outward Bound Canada from 1995- 2001, served on the board of Outward Bound International for 4 years, and is currently chair of the OBC Foundation. He introduced OBC as a partner of Evergreen in the Brick Works project and is currently active with the Evergreen/Brick Works Campaign Cabinet.
